World class stone specialist Lapicida offers matchless technical expertise, combining traditional craftsmanship with the world’s most advanced CNC stone shaping mill. One of only three such machines in the world, it has recently been commissioned in their Harrogate workshops and, allied to advanced scanning technology, allows the production of even very large 3-D objects in stone, with minute detailing precisely rendered.

In 2013 Lapicida launched a design collaboration with celebrated product designer Bethan Gray to showcase its technical capabilities to brilliant advantage. One of the first products to be launched was the Herringbone Table, a virtuoso piece combining state-of-the-art manufacturing with intensely skilled hand finishing.

The Herringbone Table’s distinctive zig-zag pattern unites white Carrara and black Nero Marquina marble so closely that the two colours meld into a single surface. The two slabs of contrasting marble are cut using advanced water jet technology. This shapes them so precisely that they can then be connected as perfect positive and negative. Natural grain patterns are matched across the whole tabletop, underlining the astonishing craftsmanship involved in producing this design. A solid brass base with elegantly tapered legs completes the piece.

Bethan’s inspiration for The Herringbone Table came from spectacular black and white stone decorations seen in iconic buildings across Europe; from the ninth-century Amalfi Cathedral in Italy to the twentieth-century San Giovanni Battista in Mogno, Switzerland.

The Herringbone Table measures 2007mm x 985mm x 741mm high and costs £30,000.

The Herringbone Table has been widely featured in national and regional press and was exhibited at the UK’s leading interior design show, Decorex International, in September 2013. It has been

Bethan Gray has also designed a further four tables for Lapicida: the round Brogue in white Carrara marble with a solid marble base and three rectangular Brogue tables in white Carrara, Nero Marquina and Montclair marbles with solid wood legs. Each of these tables features her hallmark ‘Brogue’ edge detailing, another technical tour de force from Lapicida’s craftsmen.
