Urban Splash: The 3 Towers, Machester

The 3 Towers stand in the green and pleasant Irk Valley near Manchester’s Northern Quarter. Once 1960s high rise council blocks, the towers were reclaimed by Urban Splash, who redesigned and re- clad them, and turned them into ultra stylish apartment blocks.
The brief was to bring some love back to the neglected buildings and by removing the old grey concrete cladding, externally the buildings have been transformed.
Internally, the key was to make best use of the large internal floor plans of the existing flats. Windows were replaced with full height glazing to let in the light and a modern retro approach was applied to the internal design.
The three towers have been named Emmeline, Christabel and Sylvia in recognition of the Pankhursts – three Mancunian heroines who pioneered the Suffragette movement which led to women receiving the right to vote 80 years ago.
Each building comprises 62 flats and includes 14 two-bedroom corner flats and 48 with one bedroom.
“Urban Splash’s stylish conversion of these ugly tower blocks, their choice of materials and vision to deliver designer apartments in Collyhurst, was a winning combination,” said awards judge Alison Wallace. Visit: www.urbansplash.co.uk or tel. 0333 666 9999
